Irene talked about allergy testing !

Irene now offers Allergy Testing Kits from Rock Mountain Analytical at the Upper Paradise location !

When an allergic reaction occurs, the immune system reacts by releasing cells called antibodies. The foods and inhaled particles that provoke the release of antibodies are called " allergens" . Two commonly produced antibodies are IgG and IgE. Reactions occur over several hours or several days.When an allergic reaction antibodies attach themselves to the allergen and create an antibody-allergen complex. These complexes are normally removed by special cells in the liver and spleen called macrophages, but if they are present in large numbers and the allergen continues to be consumed, the body isn't able to remove them fast enough. These allergen-antibody complex accumulate and are deposited in body tissue, causing the release of inflammation which causes chemicals which contribute to a variety of health problems;

  • headaches
  • mood disorders
  • asthma and recurring respiratory infections
  • eczema and other skin conditions
  • running noses and puffiness around the eyes
  • redness and swelling
  • tightening of airways
  • itching
Eliminating food allergens sometimes results in withdrawal symptoms like headaches, tiredness, irritability and hunger. Serious cravings for the eliminated foods are also common. Unfortunately it is often the foods you are most allergic to that you crave the most!
Testing requires the pick-up of the the kit, and a simple finger poke. The blood from the finger poke is used to saturate three test strips which are left to dry. A prepaid courier box is enclosed. Requisition form must be signed by Irene Hogan, or Rocky Mountain will not proceed with testing. Within 10-14 business days the results will be sent back, in which the patient will have a consultation with Irene to discuss the results.
The general 96 food panel is $235 plus GST.

Integrating Traditional and Alternative Therapies!
More and more patients are looking for ways to incorporate complementary and alternative medicine into their health care regimens. Alternative or complementary medicine can be used together with conventional medicine. Alternative medicine tends to be more proactive or preventative. Traditional medicine is often focused on specific parts of the body, alternative medicine deals with the body as a whole. Scientific study used to support traditional medical practice requires precise measurement of results. Due to the overall impact of alternative therapies, the results are difficult to measure. For example, it is easy to measure a drop of blood pressure, but how do you measure how much better you feel?
Studies have show that Canadians spend four billion dollars a year on alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is being increasing recognized as an integral part of health care. The New York Times recently reported "Hospitals in search of paying patients with a competitive edge are increasingly offering their patients some form of alternative medicine." The numbers of hospitals offering alternative therapies nearly doubled from 1998-2000, according to a survey by the American Hospital Association" . Complementary medicine will allow the patient to chose and incorporate multiple health prospectives into their lives. Complementary medicine allows patients looking for disease prevention and all over body health, that just doesn't happen by chance. It is up to the individual on how to apply a life-long process of health promotion. Just remember it only starts with a few small steps.

Irene talked about the rise of Chronic Disease.

A recent article in the new England Journal of Medicine entitled " A potential decline in life expectancy in the 21st century"
The article talks about chronic disease and its dominant pattern in the 21st century. But Why?? The answer is not due to the lack of good crisis care medicine, but rather in the changes in lifestyle and the environment that translates into the increase in chronic disease. We are changing as a country, we are getting older and are kids are getting sicker. Lifestyle disease now account for the number one family of problems and their management using the present system of health care utilizes 78% of medical services. There is no pill that can effectively deal with the rising tide of metabolic syndrome, preclinical autoimmune disease, chronic digestive disorders, depression and learning difficulties. The first line of defense against these conditions is the implementation of lifestyle and nutrition programs. When the body goes into a state of stress, inflammation usually occurs. Inflammation is directly linked to disease. Nutrition and environmental factors influence the epigenome and make certain messages that code for health or disease processes more or less available. So what can one do? Eat well ! exercise! Live well ! Effective health management will keep emerging chronic diseases at bay !

Hilton talked about the depletion of vitamins through smoking!

We know that infection and stress deplete certain nutrients from the body, specifically vitamin C. Smoking is a chemical stress that seems to increase turnover of vitamin C in the body, leading to lower concentrations of vitamin C in the blood. Studies also suggest that smoking may affect the absorption of calcium, resulting in accelerated bone loss. Depletion of vitamin E, A, and other trace minerals are also directly impacted by smoking. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is depleted rapidly from the body, and smoking, in general, causes vitamin C concentrations in the body to become depleted. It has been determined that smokers should consume at least 100 mg of vitamin C daily, to meet their daily vitamin C requirements. Most of vitamin E comes from diet, but due to the large and steadily reduced low-fat diets, part of the result is the loss of vitamin E. For protection, vitamin E must be present in preventing and repairing health disease. Nearly 50 million Americas smoke. Smokers have the lowest vitamin C levels and the fastest disappearance of vitamin E. This is the body's complex biochemical 's natural mechanism against toxins. When certain agents, like cigarette smoke place the body in a constant oxidative stress, cell mutation, this stage can lead to the onset for disease. One thing to keep in mind is that suppressing the immune system, like poor nutrition, nutrient depletion, smoking, lack of exercise and sunlight your body will have a hard time doing it's job by cleaning up cancerous cells around the body. Conclusion, stay healthy, don't smoke!

Today is Weedless Wednesday !!! National Non-Smoking Week !

National Non-Smoking Week has been observed for more than 30 years, from its first conception in 1977. National Non-smoking week is one of the longest running and most important events in Canada's. It promotes education to Canadians about the danger of smoking, the addiction to tobacco, to help people quit smoking, promotes the right of individuals to breath unpolluted air by tobacco,to de-normalize the tobacco marketing practices and assist in the attainment of a smoke-free society in Canada.

Rexall / DayNight offers the stop-study @ the UpperParadise location. This study will offer 5 weeks free Nicotine Replacement for those who wish to stop smoking. Participants must first take a moment on line to complete a questionnaire, which in return will be given a Voucher #. Upon receiving the voucher number, the eligible participant must contact the pharmacy to book an appointment. Deadline for the study is march 31 /2008.

Product discussed: Chantix . New stop smoking medication to help people quit smoking. Cigarette smokers who want to quit smoking may now consider a new tool in their fight to stop smoking. The Food and Drug Administration have approved Chantix. It isn't a magic pill, but it may make it easier for people who want to quit. For best results it's recommended you start taking Chantic a week before your quit date. Doctors prescribe the the pill for 12 weeks. Once a day at first then twice a day. Gradually increasing the dosage helps reduce the chance of side effects.

Hilton talked about Constipation!

What is constipation ? Constipation is defined as having a bowel movement fewer than three times per week. With constipation stools are usually hard, dry, small in size and difficult to eliminate. Some people who are constipated find it painful to have a bowel movement and often also experience bloating, straining and the sensation of a full bowel. Not having a bowel movement everyday does not necessary mean you are constipated, normal stool elimination can be three times a day to three times a week, depends on the person. Constipation is a symptom not a disease. Almost everyone will experience constipation at some point in their life, poor diet is usually the cause. Most constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding the cause the prevention and treatment will help most people find relief. Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the United States, 4 million have frequent constipation with 2.5 million physician visits each year. Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon's muscle contractions are slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. As a result stools can became hard and dry. Common causes of constipation are:

  • Not enough fiber in the diet
  • Lack of physical activity (especially in the elderly)
  • medications
  • milk
  • IBS
  • Changes in life or routine, pregnancy, aging, travel
  • Abuse of laxatives
  • Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement
  • Dehydration
  • Specific diseases or conditions like stroke
  • Problems with the colon and rectum
  • Problems with intestinal function
How is Constipated treated? Although treatment depends on the cause, severity and duration of the constipation, inmost cases dietary and lifestyle changes will help relieve symptoms and help prevent them from recurring.

  • Diet
  • Lifestyle changes
  • laxatives
  • Stimulants
  • Osmotics
  • Stool softeners
  • Lubricants
  • Saline laxatives
  • Chloride channel activators

Irene talked about Fiber !

Dietary fiber is the part of a plant that provides and maintains the plants structure. These fibers are unrelated chemically, however they all have one thing in common, they can't be digested by the human body. For this reason, they can help correct disorders of the large intestine ( colon) and keep it functioning normally. Therefore it is important to increase the amount of fiber in your diet, as studies have indicated Canadians don't get enough fiber in their diet. The importance of dietary fiber or also called roughage or bulk promotes the wavelike contractions that keep food moving through the intestine. Also high-fiber foods expand the inside walls of the colon. This eases the passage of waste. Fibrous substances pass through the intestine undigested. They also absorb many times their weight in water, resulting in softer, bulkier stools.
Because a high-fiber diet causes a large, soft bulky stool that passes through the bowel easily and quickly, the chances of digestive tract disorders can be avoided, halted or even reversed. Disorders like IBS, Diverticulitis and colon polyps cancer. Dietary fiber is food mostly in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes and is the best healthiest way to prevent constipation.
Fiber is classified into two categories, those that don't dissolve in water ( insoluble fiber) and those that do ( soluble fiber). Benefits of a high-fiber diet include; prevents constipation, lowers your risk of digestive conditions, lowers blood cholesterol levels, controls blood sugar levels, aids in weight loss.
How much fiber do you need?
  • Men, age 50 and younger = 38 grams, Age 51 and older = 30 grams
  • Women, age 50 and younger = 25 grams, Age 51 and older = 21 grams

product recommended: Salba

What vitamins do we need? Ask your pharmacist !

What vitamins do we need to take in our daily life, if at all? The answer is yes and no but the best answer is "maybe". Studies have shown that taking daily multivitamin supplements will prevent any chronic diseases. Taking supplements will help ensure you are getting enough of nutrients that may be missing from your diet. Eating a healthy well-balanced diet should provide you with all the individual nutrients you need, but not everyone has a good diet or perhaps hates fruits or vegetables. Frequently leavening this out of your diet will leave one deficient of nutrients and in return impact your health. Taking a daily multivitamin is an inexpensive and easy way to be sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need.

Adding these supplements will be beneficial;

  • Calcium
  • Vitamin A,B,C,D,E
  • Fish Oil
  • Folic Acid
  • Antioxidants ans Zinc
  • Probiotics
  • Vitamin B12
  • Niacin
  • Beta-carotene
  • Copper as Cupric oxide
Read your labels! Better yet eat whole foods whenever possible.

Irene talked further about help for Endometriosis

  • Mainstream physicians readily acknowledge that pregnancy retards endometrisis and in some cases cures endometriosis. Mainstream medicine also acknowledges that menopause cures endometriosis. So what is it that causes and cures endometriosis? Endometriosis occurs when endometrial cells the cells that make up the lining of the uterus, travels outside the uterus to other parts of the body. These misplaced cells are stimulated by hormones, just like the cells within the uterus and build up and then shed blood during menstruation each month. Blood from these cells causes deposits to build up and form scar tissue, which can be very painful. Endometriosis affects 10-20% of Canadian women of childbearing age. It is one of the main causes of infertility in women. What causes it? the cause is unknown, but there are theories. Abnormal functioning of the immune system, retrograde menstruation, in which blood flows backward through the fallopian tubes, genetic or heredity factors. Because there is no cure, treatments are designed to relieve symptoms. Treatment options are drug therapies, surgical procedures and complementary and alternative therapies. Herbs are generally a safe way to strengthen and tone the body's systems, as with any therapy you should work with your health care provider. Eliminate all known food allergens, eliminate alcohol, caffeine, refined foods, sugar and saturated fats, which can increase inflammation and pain. Avoid non-organic meat and meat which may contain hormones.

  • Dandelion
  • Prickly Ash

Drug interactions with Grapefruit !

Believe it or not, grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with the effects of several medications. The effect begins within four hours of drinking or eating grapefruit and lasts for up to 24 hours because the body needs time to replace the enzymes. A group of enzymes, or proteins convert drugs into inactive substances that are readily eliminated from the body. These enzymes are found in the liver, small intestine and kidney. A component in grapefruit juice binds to and inactivates two of these enzymes in the intestine. As a result the enzymes are unable to break down certain drugs, an effect that increases the amount of the drug in the body and may exaggerate the body's response to the drug. This is known as a drug-food interaction. Of course each person differs, so the extent of the drug varies from person to person and with the increase of certain drugs as do the side effects. Be sure to check with the pharmacist !

Examples of medications that may be affected by grape juice.

Anti fungal, Cholesterol-lowering agents, Blood pressure-lowering agents, Anti-anxiety agents , drugs used to prevent transplant rejection .

Back to school and Lice problems!!

What are Head Lice? They are also called Pediculus Humamus Capitis ( peh-dick-you-lus hue-man-us cap-ih-tus). Head lice are parasitic insects found on the heads of people. Having lice is a very common problem, and anyone at any age can get them. Anyone who comes on close contact ( especially head-to-head contact) with someone who already has lice is at greatest risk. Occasionally head lice can be acquired from contact with clothings, such as hats or scarves. Statistically girls get lice more often than boys, women more often than men. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting lice. Symptoms and signs of head lice are, tickling felling or something moving in the hair. Itching caused by an allergic reaction to the bites. Irritability. Sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores can become infected. An infestation is diagnosed by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or adults. Nits are head lice eggs. They are very small about the size of a pin head. The female lays the eggs at the base of the hair shaft near the scalp, and can be easily confused as dandruff. They are oval and usually white or yellow. They take one week to hatch. The adult is the size of a sesame seed, and is tan to grayish-white. People with dark hair, the adult will look darker. To live the adult needs to feed on blood, if the adult falls off a person it will die within 2 days. Getting rid of head lice requires treating the individual, the family, and the household. Talk to your pharmacist about getting rid of head lice. Lice can be resistant to some treatments, and the best treatment may be where you live.
Common Myths about head lice:
  • Lice Jump. In fact they cannot, they are transferred by contact.
  • I should use a pesticide in the house. There is no need to clean every inch of the house, the nits that hatch will die without food within 2 days. Concentrate on the bedding, hats, coats, toys and furniture.
  • Fumigating. Will not be effective as the Lice live on humans and has on effect on unhatched eggs.
  • Using petroleum jelly. Is ineffective in destroying nits., and very difficult to remove from the hair.
  • Mayonnaise will kill lice. No, also ineffective.
  • Need to shave the head. Can help the problem, but will be traumatic to the child or individual.
  • Lice are dangerous and carry disease. Lice is not a serious health risk.
  • Once you kill lice you are done. Lice eggs will hatch 7-10 days, if not removed likely to be re-infested.
  • You will know right aways if you have lice. It takes the immune system to develop a sensitivity to lice saliva. By the time you find out , several generations are in residence.
  • FACT; Lice will die at temperatures over 130 degrees. Should wash clothing in hot water or using a dryer.
  • FACT; Over 80% of Canadian schools will have lice break-outs each year.
  • FACT; African-Americans generally do not get lice. The hair shaft are as such it is difficult for lice to adhere to.

Almost 40% of Canadians use a vitamin and or mineral supplement on a regular basis. All Canadians are encouraged to follow the recommendations in Eating Well with Canada's Food Guise. At some stages of one's lifestyle it is difficult to meet nutrient needs from food alone because the need is too great or perhaps food intake is inadequate for some reason, or changes in the body lead to inefficient nutrient utilization. Miconutrient malnutrition affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide. The adverse effects are profound and include premature death, poor health, blindness, growth stunting, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and low work capacity. At some stages of life, and with the advancing age population some will find it difficult to meet nutrient needs from food alone. The need for appropriate vitamin/mineral supplement will improve nutritional status. Use of a supplement should be in addition to not in place of healthy food choices. Vegan diets exclude all animal products are at an increase risk of vitamin b12 deficiency because this nutrient is only found in foods of animal origin. Vegetarian diets are also at at risk of zinc / iron deficiency. Men and women who smoke at any age have decreased plasma and leukocyte levels of Vitamin C. Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis are also Vitamin C deficient. Teenagers with irregular eating habits are calcium and iron deficient. Men and Women over the age of 50 will experience age related bone loss. Increasing calcium intake can slow age-related demineralization in both men & women. Who's in charge? It's your health care, take control!

Learn the important ways to put YOUR health in your hands.
As time gos on, the odds are at one point in your life you will be faced with a medical concern, fear or a serious illness if not yourself, perhaps a family member. You will need the best possible health care and information. It's true we now have better medical health care than ever before. Good advice, critical screenings and good treatments may be indeed be readily available, but you must also need to stand up for yourself and how to understand the process of finding and securing the best care, that is tailored for you. Advocacy for your best health care is a role that more people need to think about. Of course you don't need to be challenged by a life-threatening illness to be a better advocate for your own health. It's always good to take charge and become a savvy medical consumer. But the responsibility must fall on you, the patient, to question, to learn, to research. Find, gather, and explore the possibilities and information about your medical concern. There is no doubt you already know your condition first hand. Know your numbers, be it high blood pressure or diabetes, check on a daily basis, make it a part of your routine. Just a note to the wise, don't believe everything you read, double-check your info!
