Irene talked about the rise of Chronic Disease.

A recent article in the new England Journal of Medicine entitled " A potential decline in life expectancy in the 21st century"
The article talks about chronic disease and its dominant pattern in the 21st century. But Why?? The answer is not due to the lack of good crisis care medicine, but rather in the changes in lifestyle and the environment that translates into the increase in chronic disease. We are changing as a country, we are getting older and are kids are getting sicker. Lifestyle disease now account for the number one family of problems and their management using the present system of health care utilizes 78% of medical services. There is no pill that can effectively deal with the rising tide of metabolic syndrome, preclinical autoimmune disease, chronic digestive disorders, depression and learning difficulties. The first line of defense against these conditions is the implementation of lifestyle and nutrition programs. When the body goes into a state of stress, inflammation usually occurs. Inflammation is directly linked to disease. Nutrition and environmental factors influence the epigenome and make certain messages that code for health or disease processes more or less available. So what can one do? Eat well ! exercise! Live well ! Effective health management will keep emerging chronic diseases at bay !
