Almost 40% of Canadians use a vitamin and or mineral supplement on a regular basis. All Canadians are encouraged to follow the recommendations in Eating Well with Canada's Food Guise. At some stages of one's lifestyle it is difficult to meet nutrient needs from food alone because the need is too great or perhaps food intake is inadequate for some reason, or changes in the body lead to inefficient nutrient utilization. Miconutrient malnutrition affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide. The adverse effects are profound and include premature death, poor health, blindness, growth stunting, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and low work capacity. At some stages of life, and with the advancing age population some will find it difficult to meet nutrient needs from food alone. The need for appropriate vitamin/mineral supplement will improve nutritional status. Use of a supplement should be in addition to not in place of healthy food choices. Vegan diets exclude all animal products are at an increase risk of vitamin b12 deficiency because this nutrient is only found in foods of animal origin. Vegetarian diets are also at at risk of zinc / iron deficiency. Men and women who smoke at any age have decreased plasma and leukocyte levels of Vitamin C. Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis are also Vitamin C deficient. Teenagers with irregular eating habits are calcium and iron deficient. Men and Women over the age of 50 will experience age related bone loss. Increasing calcium intake can slow age-related demineralization in both men & women. All women of reproductive age are advised to consume both the recommended dietary allowance for folate, Dietary Folate Equivalents and an additional 400 ug/day of synthetic folic either as a supplement or through fortified food.
